Katedra Edukacji Wizualnej i Badań nad Sztuką Wydziału Sztuk Pięknych UMK w Toruniu zaprasza do interdyscyplinarnej dyskusji nad poznawczą rolą sztuki i jej znaczeniem w rozumieniu współczesnego świata. Szczególna uwaga zostanie poświęcona temu, w jaki sposób sztuka – poprzez obrazowanie, interpretację i przekraczanie granic społecznych, politycznych i kulturowych – wpływa na kształtowanie świadomości globalnej, współzależności losów oraz etyki odpowiedzialności poprzez wizualne formy dialogu.
Wykładowcą plenarnym konferencji będzie prof. W.J.T. Mitchell, wybitny teoretyk kultury wizualnej i ikonologii oraz badacz literatury na Uniwersytecie Chicagowskim (Gaylord Donnelley Distinguished Service Professor of English and Art History), wieloletni redaktor naczelny czasopisma „Critical Inquiry”, autor znanych na świecie i w Polsce publikacji, w tym książki Czego chcą obrazy? Pragnienia przedstawień, życie i miłość obrazów (Warszawa, 2013).
Wydarzenie wpisuje się w program obchodów jubileuszu 80-lecia Wydziału Sztuk Pięknych Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu.

Organizer: the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń
The Department of Visual Education and Art Research at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, together with the Wozownia Art Gallery in Toruń, invite participants to an interdisciplinary discussion on the cognitive role of art and its significance in understanding the contemporary world. Particular attention will be given to how art – through representation, interpretation, and the crossing of social, political, and cultural boundaries – contributes to shaping global awareness, the interdependence of human destinies, and an ethics of responsibility through visual forms of dialogue.
The plenary lecture will be delivered by W.J.T. Mitchell, a distinguished scholar of visual culture, iconology, and literature at University of Chicago (Gaylord Donnelley Distinguished Service Professor of English and Art History), former long-time editor-in-chief of Critical Inquiry, and author of numerous internationally acclaimed publications, including What Do Pictures Want? The Lives and Loves of Images (University of Chicago Press, 2005).
The event is part of the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
