Wykład ten bada historię i ewolucję krojów pisma, badając, w jaki sposób typografia kształtuje percepcję, komunikację i ekspresję artystyczną. Od początków istnienia ruchomych czcionek do współczesnego projektowania cyfrowego, kroje pisma odgrywały kluczową rolę w przekazywaniu znaczenia wykraczającego poza słowa, które tworzą. Wybory typograficzne mogą wpływać na czytelność, emocje i tożsamość kulturową, a także na narrację wizualną. Ponadto wykład zbada, w jaki sposób typografia jest zintegrowana z twórczą praktyką Jonathana McFaddena, wykorzystując formy liter jako narzędzie zarówno wizualne, jak i koncepcyjne.

Jonathan McFadden uzyskał tytuł magistra sztuk pięknych w zakresie grafiki warsztatowej w Edinburgh College of Art w Wielkiej Brytanii (2009), tytuł licencjata sztuk pięknych w zakresie grafiki warsztatowej (2006) oraz tytuł licencjata języka francuskiego (2006) na Texas State University. Jego prace były wystawiane w National Gallery of Scotland, Royal Scottish Academy, University of Texas- San Antonio, University of Wisconsin- Madison, Zayed University, Julio Valdez Project Space, Northwestern University, Design Museum of Chicago, University of Houston i wielu innych miejscach krajowych i międzynarodowych, w tym ponad 100 wystawach grupowych. W latach 2010-11 Jonathan był stypendystą Jerome'a w Highpoint Center for Printmaking w Minneapolis. Podjął również rezydencje w Prairie Center for the Arts, Cove Park, 55 LTD, Anchor Graphics, Endless Editions, Edition/ Basel, Fyns Grafiske Værksted i Atelier Presse Papier. Part 1:
Title: "Bad News: Text as Material for Counter-Culture"
Lecturer: Hannah Smith, Professor, University of Kentucky
Hannah Smith integrates text into 3D-printed, illuminated sculptures to mimic commercial allure while delivering subversive content. Smith’s Light-based signage synthesizes pop aesthetics with corporate messaging, slogans, and neon signage, to highlight how language is used to manipulate, persuade, or obscure deeper socio-political realities.
Biography:
Hannah Smith is an interdisciplinary artist and educator currently based between Lexington, KY and Cincinnati, OH. Smith received her MFA from the University of Kentucky and a BFA from Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH. She currently runs the Digital Labs at the School of Art and Visual Studies, University of Kentucky, and formerly taught 3D Animation at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, sculpture and printmaking at both Northern Kentucky University and the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts.
Smith was awarded a Future Art Award from Mozaik Philanthropy (2022), and has exhibited work nationally and internationally at the Carnegie, Covington, KY (2023); Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, Louisville, KY (2022); QRTC, Athens, Greece (2022); Sculptors Alliance, New York, NY (2021); 48-Stunden Neukölln Biennale, Berlin, Germany (2020); and the CICA Museum Seoul, South Korea (2019), among other venues.

Title: "Type as Form: Utilizing the History and Impact of Typography in Artistic Practice"
Lecturer: Jonathan McFadden, Professor, University of Kentucky
This lecture explores the history and evolution of typefaces, examining how typography shapes perception, communication, and artistic expression. From the early days of movable type to contemporary digital design, typefaces have played a crucial role in conveying meaning beyond the words they form. Typographic choices can influence readability, emotion, and cultural identity, as well as their impact on visual narrative. Additionally, the lecture will investigate how typography is integrated into Jonatha McFadden's creative practice, using letterforms as both a visual and conceptual tool.
Biography:
Jonathan McFadden holds a MFA in printmaking from Edinburgh College of Art, United Kingdom (2009), BFA in Printmaking (2006), and BA in French (2006) from Texas State University. His work has been exhibited at the National Gallery of Scotland, Royal Scottish Academy, University of Texas- San Antonio, University of Wisconsin- Madison, Zayed University, Julio Valdez Project Space, Northwestern University, Design Museum of Chicago, University of Houston, and many other national and international venues including over 100 group exhibitions. From 2010-11 Jonathan was a Jerome Fellow at Highpoint Center for Printmaking in Minneapolis. He has also undertaken residencies at the Prairie Center for the Arts, Cove Park, 55 LTD, Anchor Graphics, Endless Editions, Edition/ Basel, Fyns Grafiske Værksted, and Atelier Presse Papier. Jonathan has received ten grants from the Great Meadows Foundation, the Al Smith Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council, and a cultural grant from U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen. Currently, Jonathan is Professor of Print Media and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Kentucky.
